SEVENTEEN
After I leave Maggie Warren's I go up to Joyce Lombardi's and let myself in with the key I never gave back to Willy Dink and which he never asked for. I remember seeing some pictures of Frazier in the Sunday supplement of the Tribune last week or the week before. I go to the pile of newspapers on the shelf in the kitchen and find the section. One of the photos has been cut out. From the captions I can tell it was one of Frazier, probably a portrait shot. There's a couple of other, smaller pictures of him with other people. I take the page with me over to Kropotkin's.
"You need some more help?" he says.
I show him the pictures and pointed to Frazier. "This the guy who came looking for Joyce so many times the other day?"
I got my finger on Frazier's bow tie, right under his smiling face. Kropotkin reaches over and pushes my finger across about two inches.
"This guy. I never seen the other one."
I read the caption. It says, "Republican Candidate for Governor Charles Frazier and Aides."
"Is that all I can do for you?" Kropotkin says.
"One other thing. How's Miller's business doing?"
"He pays the rent on time."
"How come he ain't got a receptionist?"
"They come and go."
"How's that?"
"He has receptionists but they don't last too long. You want to ask why, go over to the Rullin mansion. You know, to the museum I told you about. The last one who quit or got fired is working there."
"Who told you?"
"She did. I see her over to Stosh's Saloon one night."
"She got a name?"
"Sure, but I don't remember it."
It takes me half an hour to find a parking place any wheres near close to the Ohio Illinois Insurance building on North Michigan Avenue where Frazier has his offices. I know that he used to run the company but three years ago he steps down as CEO and starts doing good works, pointing his nose toward the governor's mansion. He still sits on the board and they let him use a suite of offices.
Maybe I should tell you a little bit about how the Republicans and Democrats make a deal about the city of Chicago and the state of Illinois. They both put candidates in the field for most of the jobs in the city and state, but the truth is the Democrats expect to win Chicago and Cook County and the Republicans get to run the state.
So, how it works out is, the Democratic party will lend a helping hand to a Republican candidate running for state and expect favor for favor for the Democrats running in the city of Chicago and the county of Cook.
Frazier's suite is on the top floor. I get by the guard at the private elevator by telling him I'm a messenger from Ray Carrigan, the Democratic party chairman. He calls up and the okay comes down in about five minutes.
The doors at the top open onto an acre of marble floor.
